Jakarta is the 9th worst city for driving in the world: Waze report

Jakarta obviously has crazy, terrible, soul crushing traffic. But do we have, as some have claimed in the past, “the worst traffic in the world”? Well, not according to the results of a new report by traffic app Waze, which shows there are 8 cities where drivers are even unhappier than in the Indonesian capital, including a few other urban centers in our archipelago.
Waze, a traffic app which collects real-time traffic data and reports from users across the globe, recently released the results of their second annual “Waze Driver Satisfaction Index”, which measures satisfaction based on a number of factors including traffic, safety and road quality.

Waze collected data from users in 38 countries and 235 cities. Based on that information, Jakarta came in #178 out of 186 for all of the cities ranked (there were only 186 places due to tied scores).
The index ranking is based on the average score of each factor used to determine driver satisfaction, and each factor is rated on a 1-10 scale, with ten equalling totally satisfied and one equaling miserable.
Jakarta earned a 3.37 rating in overall satisfaction, showing drivers here are pretty far towards the miserable side. That number was mainly brought down by the capital’s rock-bottom rating of just 0.6 in the traffic category. Surprisingly, Jakarta somehow scored a 9.8 in the safety category, but we guess it’s hard to get into accidents when you’re stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
So which are the eight cities that are unfortunate to have even unhappier drivers than Jakarta?

178: Jakarta, Indonesia; 3.37
179: Guatemala, Guatemala; 3.36
180: Cali, Colombia; 3.22
181: Surbaya, Indonesia; 3.14
182: Bandung, Indonesia; 3.00
183: Denpasar, Indonesia; 2.89
184: San Salvador, El Salvador, 2.85
185: Bogor, Indonesia; 2.15
186: Cebu, Philippines; 1.15

That's right, according to Waze Surabaya, Bandung and Denpasar all have more miserable drivers than Jakarta. On the other end of the scale, Valence, France had the highest driver satisfaction rating with a score of 8.81.
You can explore the rankings and data from Waze’s Driver Satisfaction Index on their interactive website.

Alleged male prostitution ring in Batam must be investigated: Minister

Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa has called on Batam authorities to thoroughly investigate an alleged underage male prostitution ring involving migrants from Afghanistan and Pakistan as part of the state’s efforts to protect children from prostitution networks.

The minister said she had met and spoken with Batam, Rempang and Galang (Barelang) Police officials to more deeply explore the matter.

“We have to separate two issues in this matter: namely immigration and prostitution problems. On immigration-related issues, it has been handled by the Law and Human Rights Ministry and Foreign Affairs Ministry, but for prostitution-related aspects, I have coordinated with Barelang Police officials,” said Khofifah on Saturday.

“I’ve been informed they have investigated this case and the [alleged] perpetrators have been arrested.”

Speaking on the sidelines of her visit to Batam on Saturday, Khofifah said investigation and law enforcement were part of the efforts to establish a layered alertness so that no boy or girl becomes trapped by a prostitution network.

“Currently, we are preparing anticipatory measures to protect not only girls but also boys from falling into a prostitution network. This is because child prostitution syndicates have begun to target male victims,” said Khofifah.

On Sept. 6, Batam Immigration officials revealed the alleged involvement of 10 migrants in a male prostitution ring offering sex services not only to female but also to male clients in Batam.

Khofifah said the government was aiming to close 99 prostitution complexes in areas across Indonesia, including one in Batam, by 2019.

Indonesia Confident that 12 Million Foreign Tourists to Visit Before End of 2016

The Indonesian government remains confident that a target of 12 million foreign tourist visitors nationwide will be achieved by the end of 2016.

Hiramsyah Thaib who works in tourism development at the Ministry of Tourism, said in Nusa Dua, Bali on Wednesday, August 31, 2016, that a total of 5,291,583 foreign tourists came to Indonesia in the first six months of the year, exceeding a stated target of 5.1 million visitors.

Quoted by Beritabali.com, Hiramsyah said, “At this time, the number of foreign tourists for the first half of 2016 has achieved 44% of the annual target of 12 million people.”

Looking back at 2015, Thaib said tourist arrivals were pleasing, achieving 10.4 million foreign visitors, a total that exceed the revised government target and generated US$12.3 billion in foreign exchange. Meanwhile, domestic tourist trips in 2015 totaled 259 million journeys.

Data supplied by the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) shows US$858.67 million in new investments were secured during the first six-months of 2016. This was comprised of US$791.99 million if foreign investments and US$66.68 million in domestic projects.

When investment is compared to the same period in 2015, investments are up 69.78% in 2016. Foreign investments during semester one of 2016 increased 121.5% when compared to 2015.

Indonesia Forklore - The Baruklinting Dragon (Folklore from Central Java)

A long time ago, there was a giant dragon. His name was Baruklinting. One day, one of the gods asked him to take nine shepherds as an offering for the gods.

Then Baruklinting went to a mountain. He opened his big mouth every day. He hoped that shepherds would enter his big mouth. In the village, ten shepherds took their cows to the grass field on the mountain. They didn’t know there was a dragon. One of the shepherds was very skinny and dirty. His friends always made fun of him. The skinny shepherd never got angry. He just kept quiet and left his friends every time they laughed at him.

It was a very hot day. All shepherds were very tired. They wanted to find a cool place to rest. The skinny shepherd had already found a nice place to rest. It was under a big tree. The place was cool so he did not feel hot anymore. His friends were jealous.

“Let’s steal his place,” said one of them.

“Yes! Let’s do it!” other shepherds agreed.

They took some mud and threw it to the skinny shepherds. The skinny shepherd was so sad. Still, he did not get angry. He just left them and walked away.

“Ha ha ha. Go now! You skinny boy!” they laughed at him.

Suddenly the sky became dark. There were a thunder and lightning. Heavy rain began to fall. The shepherds did not want to get wet. They had to find a better place. They finally found a big cave. The cave had sharp rocks inside it. All shepherds did not know that the cave was actually the mouth of the giant dragon. Yes, it was Baruklinting’s mouth! When all shepherds were inside the ‘cave’, suddenly one of them pushed the skinny shepherd away.

“Go out! You don’t belong here! It’s only for the big boys!”

"But it was raining outside,” said skinny shepherd.

"I don’t care!” then they pushed him.

Right after the skinny shepherd was outside the cave, it suddenly closed! Yes, Baruklinting just finished his job to get nine shepherds for the gods.

When the skinny shepherds saw the cave closed, he ran away! He ran as fast as he could. He then told the villagers about the cave and the dragon. The villagers then went to the mountain to kill the dragon. But when they arrived, the dragon had already gone.

From that day on, the village was named Kesongo Village. Songo meant nine for the nine shepherds who were eaten by Baruklinting Dragon.

The full picture of who would be competing in the 2017 Jakarta Governor’s election did not become clear until late last Friday, the last day that candidates could officially register with the election committee. After the ruling PDI-P party announced on Tuesday that they would be backing current Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama in his reelection bid, rival parties were left scrambling to find worthy challengers to the incumbent.

Eventually support coalesced around two figures who were rarely discussed in the run-up to the candidate announcements. The so-called Cikeas Coalition, made up of the Democratic Party, PPP, PKB and PAN, decided to support Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, the 38-year-old son of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, paired with current Jakarta Deputy Governor for Tourism and Culture Sylviana Murni. Gerindra and PKS went with former education minister Anies Baswedan paired with businessman Sandiaga Uno.

While Ahok has strong poll numbers, a proven track record and the backing of the ruling party, the three-way race could still be a fiercely fought one. There are already virulently anti-Ahok activists who have resorted to attacks on his race and religion to try and bring the governor down. If such attacks are used against Ahok by his rivals, the race could get very ugly indeed.

But here’s a good sign that next year’s election will be fairly fought on the issues by candidates who mutually respect one another - a selfie featuring all six gubernatorial candidates smiling together.

The selfie was taken on Saturday at Mintohardjo Navy Hospital, where each candidate had to undergo a mandatory health check-up as part of the registration process. It was posted to social media by Anies and his campaign. Here’s the selfie again from a different angle.

Of course it’s hard to tell from a single photo what the tone of this election will be like. But we like to think this was more that just a photo-op for the candidates - that they actually do respect their political rivals and will make this election one about ideas, policies and how to make Jakarta a better city for everybody.

Trash-scavenging policeman to be honoured for refusing bribes after 40 years

A member of Indonesia's notoriously corrupt police is to be honoured for refusing to accept bribes during his 40-year career, instead scavenging garbage to supplement his meagre salary, an official said on Thursday (June 30).

While many countries give awards for police bravery, Indonesian authorities have decided to honour policeman Seladi, 57, after he became a media sensation when the story of his determination not to accept kickbacks emerged.

The police in Indonesia are considered one of the country's most graft-ridden institutions. They are accused of regularly extorting bribes from the public, being involved in the drugs trade, and have been embroiled in numerous high-profile corruption cases.

But father-of-three Seladi insists he always refused bribes despite earning only the equivalent of about US$400 a month and facing much temptation, as he worked in the department that issued driving licences in the city of Malang, on Java island.

"In the driving licence department, there is a lot of temptation," he told AFP.
"Many people want to give me money or gifts so they can pass their driving test. But I always refused - my parents taught me not to take bribes."

He was unable to afford his own house, meaning he had to live with his wife and children at the home of his parents-in-law.

In 2004, Seladi began scavenging from garbage dumps to top up his state income, earning on average an extra US$5 a day, mostly by selling on recyclable items.

East Java province police spokesman Argo Yuwono said Seladi would be honoured at a ceremony on Indonesia's national police day on Friday for not accepting bribes, and for his dedication in supporting his family by doing extra work.

The spokesman did not say what exactly Seladi would receive.

Indonesia was ranked 88th out of 168 countries and territories in NGO Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index last year. A number one ranking represents the least corrupt.

Indonesia Is Considering a National Alcohol Ban

Tourism officials say it will deter people from visiting the island nation.

Farewell, Bintang? Au revoir, Anker? The Indonesian House of Representatives is considering a bill that bans producing, consuming, or distributing beverages that contain more than one percent alcohol throughout the country. But that's not all it would curb: Some officials believe that the ban, which is up for a vote in the coming weeks, could effectively kill the local tourism industry. While many of the nearly 11 million people who visit Indonesia annually want to relax on beaches or have an Elizabeth Gilbert-style Eat, Pray, Love experience, others come to take part in resort culture on islands like Bali, which unlike the rest of the country, is predominantly Hindu and has looser laws about alcohol. Hariyadi Sukamdani, head of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), told the Jakarta Post that "If the bill is passed, our business will be done. No matter how beautiful the country is, if [tourists] can't find alcohol, they won't want to come here."

This isn't the first time that Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, has struggled to find a balance between economic growth and adherence to local customs. In May, Indonesia passed a law blocking the sale of beer in convenience stores and other small neighborhood shops. Although that meant that it was still possible to buy beer, wine, and spirits in large supermarkets and at bars and restaurants, it signaled a likelihood that officials might take additional steps to limit alcohol's availability throughout the country. At that point, Bali tourism office head A.A. Gede Yuniartha Putra expressed concern that his island would be the hardest hit by the new rulings, since their economy depends so heavily on travelers coming from North America, Australia, and Europe: "Foreigners like to have a drink when they are here. This is going to seriously affect tourism."
